A new year, means a new you, right?
Nah. That’s cliché. It’s time to start being a little realistic.
Let’s face it. Setting New Year’s goals sometimes sets you up for failure– depending on how you attack these goals. By starting out slow and giving yourself guidelines, you can ease your way into the lifestyle you’ve always wanted for yourself.
Before throwing out mundane ideas like, I want to eat healthier, I want to get fit, I want to save up for… you get the idea… You need to define these goals. These goals are absolutely okay to set for yourself, but you need to give yourself a better guideline in order to actually achieve them.
Let’s start with eating healthier.
The end goal is eating healthier, but what does ‘healthy’ look like for you? Depending on your current lifestyle, healthy eating could just mean eating out less. While on the other hand, if you already cook most meals at home, healthy eating might mean including more fruits and vegetables into your meals and snacks. Once you determine what ‘healthy’ is for you, create some action steps for achieving that goal. When cooking at home, start by including vegetables and fruits as your sides, rather than chips, breadsticks, etc. You don’t need to create an elaborate meal plan to eat healthy, begin by replacing what you already eat with whole foods. Eventually you can work your way up to eating healthy all around, but don’t put too much pressure on yourself to ONLY eat whole foods. As soon as you tell yourself that you can’t have it, that’s all you’re going to crave. Healthy eating and living is all about moderation. Take it one step at a time and don’t restrict yourself!
‘I want to get fit’ is another great example for a New Year’s goal that usually gets thrown out the window. Once again, you need to define this goal. What does ‘getting fit’ mean to you? Do you want to lose X amount of inches around your waist? Do you want to feel stronger? Do you want to get toned or grow muscle? Start with those questions and then you can determine what types of workouts you need to do in order to achieve those goals. In this case, achieving this goal on your own might be difficult, especially if you don’t have the knowledge of a fitness coach or personal trainer. If you feel like you might need some extra guidance or accountability, Rejuv has the services to help you!
All of the goals already mentioned will absolutely help you become a better version of yourself. By giving yourself proper nutrition and taking care of your body, you are already ahead of the game. But sometimes there’s a little inner work that needs to be done. You can use the same tactics as before when creating other goals, like focusing more on your passion or learning something new. Whatever it may be, take it one step at a time– set aside 30-60 minutes each day for this goal/passion/learning experience. Like I said before, life is all about balance; don’t put so much pressure on achieving specific goals. By reorganizing your schedule, prioritizing yourself, and giving yourself flexibility (because some days you might not feel like working out, eating healthy, or working on your passion) you will have a much higher chance of success, as compared to being extremely strict with yourself.
And be real with yourself. Choose goals that you genuinely want to achieve. It’s a lot easier to accomplish a goal if you truly have a desire to reach it.
